About Me
Hi! My name is Kiran. I am in my 2nd year of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at the University of Toronto and I am specializing in the Mental Health and Health stream. Before beginning my MSW, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of British Columbia. In my work, I like to incorporate a Strengths-Based Approach that aims to empower clients, as well as as Trauma-Informed Lens. As a Punjabi-Sikh woman of colour with immigrant parents, I am very comfortable having conversations about power and privilege, as well as intersectionality. I also acknowledge the role that historical and intergenerational trauma can play in an individual's life.
I have gained experience working in various roles with exposure to mental health and trauma. For the past year, I have been working as a Support Worker at a women's homeless shelter. In this work, I support clients in navigating various life stressors by being an active and empathetic listener, as well as using a Strengths-Based and Trauma-Informed approach. In the 1st year of my MSW program, I did my practicum at the University of Toronto's Health and Wellness Center as a Peer Supporter, helping university students navigate their mental health and various challenges. I am comfortable exploring diverse aspects of wellness, including emotional, social, physical, mental, cultural, and spiritual. My hope is to create a comfortable, safe, and non-judgmental space for you. Please reach out if you feel that we can work well together!

Understanding of Intersectionality and Anti-oppression
Intersectionality and anti-oppression offer a framework for understanding individuals through a broad lens, including their race, gender identity, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, culture, language, spirituality, age, marginalization, and more. I apply these to my practice by acknowledging that an individual comes with many identities that often intersect together. I use these frameworks as a means to build humility in my work as well. This allows me to further recognize how power and privilege play an integral role in creating an individual's identities. Lastly, frameworks of intersectionality and anti-oppression also allow me to create space in my work to acknowledge systemic barriers faced by individuals that are often beyond their control.
